  Shapeshifter is a “live in the studio” album comprising 11 songs. It's a kind of retrospective, with songs from different periods of my musical career since 1990 (excluding Khmer Rouge and other bands I was in before 1990). It includes solo CDs from the UK, as well as CDs with Southern Cross and Fatal Shore. I wanted to do a CD that reflects the live sound of the duo I have with David Babka. We have been playing together for eight years, and until now there has been no official recording of the work we have done together as a duo. What makes Shapeshifter different is that:
  
  a.) The songs are re-arranged specifically for a duo, with guitar arrangements by David Babka.
  b.) It was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs and no metronome track. We did two or three versions of each song and chose the best version of each. I think it captures our "live" sound very well, with all the spontaneity and improvised elements of David’s guitar work.
  c.) The sound depended very much on the positioning of ambient microphones in the live room at Stereo Mysterio in Velká Chuchle. In other words, the "old-school" method of Sam Phillips and Sun Studios.
  d.) It's a very "big" sound for a duo (one voice/one acoustic guitar/one electric guitar). David Babka played bottle neck and lap steel guitar on some tracks, but no overdubs, everything played “live”.
